Nurturing the Essence of Yoga through History and Philosophy
I cherish this season not only for the freshness that fall brings but also because it's the period when I rekindle my commitment to rooting deeper into the study of yoga. I revisit all the books (recs coming soon!!), old training manuals, readings from inspiring teachers and resources that invigorate my mind and nourish my spirit with insights on yoga. This marks my second year as the facilitator for the Yoga History & Philosophy session in Casa Vinyasa’s Home Base yoga teacher training program… bless!
I am incredibly grateful of the opportunity to serve as a mentor for aspiring yoga teachers, and my intention going into these sessions is to leave them with a broader understanding of the essence of yoga. I can imagine that the segment I lead on Yoga Philosophy and History might come across as less engaging to students who have chosen the path of Power Yoga Training. However, imo it is precisely this phase of the training that lends substance and profundity to a teacher's journey.
Throughout its history, yoga has evolved into various manifestations, influenced by diverse cultures and in modern times, heavily commercialized. It is essential for yoga teachers to be equipped with all the information on yoga, so that they can make informed decisions about how they want to experience and share yoga. This empowers them to preserve the authenticity of yoga and make choices that align with their own values and the deeper philosophies of this ancient practice.
I am not claiming that I know everything there is to know on the subject. However, my passion for this topic was ignited during my initial Yoga Teacher Training with Carla Olla and the desire to know has only grown as I continued to study the intricate workings of this holistic discipline.
Whether you are reading this during the cyclical energy of autumn or anytime of the year, it’s an invitation to stoke the fire of whatever has been laying dormant within you. And as I explore the depths of yoga's history and philosophy this season, I hope that the flame of curiosity continues to burn within all of us. Let us remember that our commitment to understanding yoga enriches not only our own practice but also the lives we touch as teachers. May this season be a reminder that a rededication to our passions can continuously evolve from a place of curiosity.
